Pen Drawing, Girl Portrait

September 1st, 2007 · 2 Comments

The following pen drawing, or sketch, is a portrait of a girl, which was drawn in 1998. The majority of the detail is in the eyes, and a few well placed delicate lines make up the rest of the face and hair. The white of the paper was utilized heavily in this art, in order to experiment with how much of the negative space could be filled in subconsciously by the viewer. This effect, along with the alternating black, white, and grey tones in the eyes, helps to achieve a ghostly appearance in the art. A slight wash of water was then used to move soft tones of gray around the paper, diluting some of the harsh contrast while still keeping the striking image in tact.
