Interesting... I like hearing about your process. Thank you for sharing that.

I could probably use a little more deliberate planning myself. I'm still amazed at the tension between a blank canvas and myself a few moments before putting the first stroke on the page... what a nerve racking moment. Feels a little like the click-click-click going up a roll coaster before the big drop. Then whoosh! ;)

I actually do a degree of planning and sketching before I attack a canvas. If nothing more to define a good balance of elements on the page. I wish I did more, especially where it comes to a quick color study. I'm always so anxious to jump into it, but find the more preplanning I do -the easier the work goes. And I agree with you. The original sketches can sometimes be beautiful pieces on their own.

I saw this post yesterday and wasn't quite sure what to say. Your style is very unique and I find it extremely attractive - but it's so far outside of my experience i don't feel qualified to say anything other than I like it a lot.

Hehe, I'm sneaky like that. ;)

Thanks for the comment! I've been doing a lot more of these quick little notecard drawings to re-visit and flush out more ideas.

Do you also do sketching and pre-vis work for paintings? I think early sketches are just as interesting as final pieces.

Hi Michael,
I checked and checked- nothing new and suddenly I’ve missed 3 new blogs! I like the your execution of horses in this sketchy style. In school they used to call that a "confident line." Also, the horizontal bending red background texture really defines their motion and energy of their movement.
A little visit to your traditional starts- huh?
