Nelly Furtado “Fan Art” Drawings & Paintings

June 30th, 2007 · 3 Comments

The following 3 drawings and paintings are stylized portraits of pop singer Nelly Furtado. Commonly referred to as “Fan Art”, these three artworks attempt to express a new interpretation of an image, to the point where the popularity of the subject comes second to the art itself.

The first drawing is in Pen & Ink, utilizing minimal lines and the white of the paper to create a striking and delicate portrait. The second drawing was done in pen, and painted with watercolors. Bright, vivid colors contrast with the heavy winter jacket and cold, pale look on her face. The warm and cool color washes mixed with crisp black lines help to create the tension. The third portrait drawing was sketched with quick energetic lines in pen. Conversely to the previous drawing, warm watercolors where used on the face, and cool blue colors highlight the enveloping environment around her. In the face, contrasting solid white and hard black lines help to keep focus and attention amidst the tension and chaos.

Avril Lavigne “Fan Art” Drawings

June 9th, 2007 · 27 Comments

Avril Lavigne, a pop artist, has produced at least 3 albums of music, so here are 3 pen and ink drawings of her. Drawings of celebrities, also called “Fan Art”, usually take memorable poses or photographs and attempt to replicate them. These drawings mirror that idea, but try to be original and not rely on a famous face for their structure. Attention was given to the eyes, and using the white of the paper more than the pen. This technique provides a striking and delicate effect in each portrait.

Pen and Ink Portraits of a Woman

June 2nd, 2007 · 2 Comments

These are three separate pen and ink drawings of a woman’s portrait. The initial sketches were drawn with pen, then water and ink washes were used to soften the edges. These three pieces of art were drawn in a very loose and careful style that allowed for strong variations between the light and dark surfaces of the portraits. A slight shade of grey wash was used to bridge the gap between the careful placing of white and black, which helps to form the shapes of the woman’s face in each drawing.

Marker Drawing of a Woman Portrait

May 23rd, 2007 · 2 Comments

This maker drawing of a woman is approximately 8″ x 5″. It is a portrait style piece of art, drawn with grey markers and energetically overlapped with vibrant marker colors. Green and yellow dominate the vibrant side of the spectrum in order to produce a less complementary color scale. So the tension in the art relies mostly on the white overlay that disrupts the flow all the other values. The red lips draw focus, and the slightly more detailed eyes help to keep the viewers attention on specific areas of the portrait.

28 Weeks Later, 28 Days Later, Digital Art

May 12th, 2007 · 4 Comments

As an ode to the recent film “28 Weeks Later“, and its predecessor “28 Days Later“, I decided to mortify a zombie looking creature. It is a digital work of art, implementing numerous adjustments to the color, value, contrast, blur, and many other effects applied to the original image. I hope it is as striking as the films were meant to be, if only captured in one irrelevant work of digital art.

Marker Drawing of a Girl

April 28th, 2007 · No Comments

This marker drawing of a girl’s face is one of the more refined portrait art works I created. I drew it in the year 2004 and the size of the art is approximately 8″ x 5″. I used markers that come in varying shades of grey to build up the girl’s face in layers, leaving the white of the paper for the highlights. Part of the initial sketch was drawn in pen, which can still be seen in the shadows and hair.

Three Watercolor Portraits

April 15th, 2007 · 2 Comments

These three watercolor portraits are 5″ x 3″ and were painted with cool, vibrant colors. Each piece of art is a portrait of a man, featuring primarily blue or purple hues. Although one of the portraits has more background color than the others, they all make use of the white space of the paper to create unique lighting effects.

Portrait of Woman with Hat

April 9th, 2007 · No Comments

This portrait of a woman wearing a hat was drawn with pen and ink in the year 2004. It is roughly 8″ x 5″. The light on the woman was striking and bright, and high contrasting shades of black, white, and grey are used throughout the art. The lines are fairly loose, and allow the drawing to breath and work with the stark white background.
